    Renovating or Restoring Georgian Houses

Georgian style homesIf you have a Georgian house and are in the process of restoring or renovating, there are some things to know about how to bring it back to its original glory as well as where to find certain exterior products like a Georgian exterior door to help complement the style. This well-loved architectural design appeals to the British sentiment for order within a rather grand size and a minimalist style that delivers sophistication in its simplicity. Common Georgian Exterior Architectural Elements

A Georgian house is recognised as being orderly and balanced in its architectural design with equally placed windows, doors, and spaces between these exterior elements. Depending on the time period within the extensive era of Georgian architecture, the exterior of a home could have columns and parapets as well as feature reddish bricks, or it could be much simpler in its design with light yellow bricks, large sash windows, and solid doors. Other admirable features of the Georgian design are tall windows that let in light, an airiness to the space thanks to high ceilings, and a brightness to it due to its focus on pale, light colours. It also has a shallow roof line, which provides a greater kerb appeal. Although it has a boxy design with not many edges or curves, it offers what many consider to be a cost-effective architectural design to emulate. The simplicity also means that materials and time to build are minimised.

    Georgian Exterior Door Options

Just like the numerous variations across the other exterior aspects of a Georgian home over time, there are also a number of Georgian exterior door options to select from: glazed georgian doors
    • Glazed Georgian Doors: This type of door has top panels that are glazed with hand cut, clear leaded glass shaped as a Bulls eye. Then, it features champhered lower panels made from solid timber with bolection mouldings that are mitred round. The bespoke frame also has a handmade lead Georgian design fanlight
    • Georgian Six-Panel Doors: This door has two top panels that are glazed with a Bulls eye design made from leaded glass. There are also raised and fielded panels. Other six-panel options may not have any glazed sections but instead are made entirely of timbre.
    • Bloomsbury Georgian Doors: This door has bolection moulds that are mitred round each chamfered panel whilst the glazing has bevelled edged glass.
    • Georgian Three-Panel Doors: This is a solid Mahogany door that has bolection moulds, which are mitered round the raised and fielded panels. Typically, this particular design has a brass kick plate and centre door knobs.  Above the door, there may or may not be a Georgian design fanlight.
    • Georgian Five-Panel Doors:  This door features four raised and fielded panels to the central and lower sections of the door and a rectangular stained glass panel at the top.
Many of these doors feature brass hardware, including kick plates, door knobs, and name plates. Fanlights can be constructed from either timber leaded lights or cast iron, depending on what suits the restoration or renovation project on the Georgian home. The doors made by Old English Doors in the Georgian style have a frame and panel construction, which is then joined by the traditional mortise and tenon with wedges to create an authentic design for your Georgian restoration project.
