Three reasons why you should finally replace your old front door!

You probably have a list of DIY jobs as long as your arm and choosing somewhere to start can be overwhelming, so everything gets put off until “next weekend”!  It's a common situation!  So, in today’s blog post, we’re encouraging you to get started on your DIY mission by finally replacing that old front door.  It's a good DIY task to start with - and there are so many fantastic benefits that will come as a result.  In today's post we're going to look at the three of those primary benefits.  Let’s begin! Three reasons why you should replace your front door now

    1) A new front door will improve the appearance - and therefore value - of your home

A well-maintained exterior and a fabulous new front door will improve the appeal of your home.  In an article for Channel4.com, Hugo Tugman (owner of Architect Your Home) pointed out that when viewing a house to buy, most people won’t even go in to look at the interior if the exterior of the house is unappealing. Whether you’re considering selling your house or not, a new front door will give your exterior (and interior hallway) a real lift for not much time, money or effort (in comparison to something like renovating loft space or having all your windows replaced.) Brighten things up: Stained glass inserts are a fantastic option for adding a splash of colour and style to your front door.  If your home is Victorian period, opt for floral motifs.  If Art Nouveau works for Edwardian houses and 1930s  - 1950s houses will suit a Art Deco-style sunburst motif. front door designs Some of our traditional door designs

    2) A new front door will improve energy efficiency

Replace your old, worn front door with something newer, and a little more energy efficient.  This will save you money on heating bills, cut out drafts and help your home to be a little more cosy. Did you know:  Wooden front doors are naturally energy efficient, as well as being a more "green" alternative to uPVC.  However, you WILL need to weatherproof your front door to protect it from the elements (and extend the door’s life) first.

This tip is especially important for those replacing broken, old or hollow front doors - poorly maintained doors make it easier for thieves to enter your home!  A burglar will scour the streets looking for easy entry into a home - don't become a victim of crime!   A well hung, solid exterior door will significantly improve your home’s security, providing an effective barrier against intruders. Audit your home security while replacing your front door and think about installing a high quality deadbolt too.  Some homes have deadbolts with exposed screws or made low quality materials - these ought to be replaced with a more robust lock. Here at Old English Doors, we personally recommend ABS Euro cylinders on front doors for security purposes.  The Master Locksmiths Association awarded these locks with their "Sold Secure Diamond Standard".  They're one of the most secure locks on the market today.
